COVID restrictions at BratBike lifted

Everything is working the usual way here at this point.

  • We are fully vaccinated.
  • The Brattleboro Select Board has lifted the order requiring masks inside stores. If you feel uncorfortable being indoors without a mask please let us know and we will wear them.
  • All bikes and parts are either in restricted supply or are unavailable for 2021.

That's it. We are doing repairs and selling bicycles and accessories as we get inventory.

We have suspended bike rentals until further notice.

Here's a listing of every last bike we have in stock.

How BratBike is dealing with the COVID 19 pandemic

(November 13, 2020)

Governor Scott has announced tighter travel restrictions and has pointedly advised Vermonters to avoid interaction with anyone not in your immediate family group.

(April 2, 2020)

We cannot let people into the store due to the risk of contamination of displayed merchandise. Bicycle shops, as transportation businesses, have been listed as Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce by the Department of Homeland Security. We are therefore providing curbside drop-off and pick-up service.

You need lights

Many people are unaware that Vermont bicycle law was changed a few years ago to better reflect a cyclist's status as a vehicle. Front and rear lights are now required on all bikes from 1/2-hour after sunset until 1/2-hour before sunrise. Operating a vehicle without proper lighting is a moving violation and carries a pretty stiff fine (like 80 bucks or so). We have lots of lighting options for less than $80.

The Light & Motion VIS500 is a good example of a modern, USB-rechargeable light. For $52.95 you get 500 lumens of LED lighting powered up by a Li-ion battery you recharge from a micro USB port. High beam, low beam, flashing modes, and the whole thing weighs about the same as the pocketful ofquarters you might have carried to shovel into a Brattleboro parking meter.

Good lights are one thing you can't afford to be without, especially at this time of year!

Bike maps from Windham Regional Commission

You can go to our regional planning commission's web site and download some very special maps—bicycle suitability maps, to be exact. These are maps showing hills, shoulders, traffic volumes, and road surfaces as they matter to cyclists.

New traffic patterns downtown

  • Please note that the sidewalk in front of our store has been widened to improve the pedestrian environment in this busy intersection. There is no longer parking directly in front of our Paramount building. There is a loading zone just past us (in front of A Candle In The Night) where you can stop to load and unload your bikes. There is no sign for this, but the parking enforcement people have assured us they will not ticket a car with flashers on stopping to load or unload. DO NOT BLOCK THE DRIVEWAY!
  • Long term parking for our end of Main Street is either the High-Grove lot, 1/2 block up High St. from us, or at the parking garage on Elliot St.

Southern Vermont's oldest continuously operating bike business

Brattleboro Bicycle Shop is a year-round, professional sales and service store right in the middle of Vermont's coolest downtown. We sell and service most types of bikes and support bikes as transportation in southern Vermont.

Our mission is to provide the highest level of person-to-person service for anyone who loves to ride bikes, especially those who prefer them to cars. We depend on cars, too, but Brattleboro Bicycle Shop believes the world will be a better place if the pendulum swings away from cars and back towards people.

Bicycles are the new toilet paper

If you have been shopping for a bicycle since the pandemic hit in 2020 you will have noticed that there aren't any. Increased demand from pandemic life changes used up all the inventory of all the bike shops and bike makers in a very short time. At the same time all manufacturers of these things were shut down. As they have slowly come back to life their products flow into a global shipping bottleneck. Pretty much every bike coming into the country is already preordered by a shop somewhere and no current orders are being taken by the makers. We have a couple of very patient customers who have been waiting for a year for their new bike.

We will cntinue doing what we do as long as the trickle of new parts and bikes keeps up!

Service Gallery — Dreams come true?

Bratbike #1 Repaint and Rebuild

We like to let our thoughts linger on some of the bikes that pass through the shop. Read about this and other projects in our Repairs & Service Bike Gallery.
