Touring Bikes
These are the machines made to carry you and your gear on long, long road trips. They may look more like road racing bikes than like mountain bikes, but they are really quite different. For one thing, you sit much more upright on a touring bike than on a racing bike or a trail bike. The bars are higher, and are closer to the saddle. There's no suspension here, but the tires are fat enough to handle packed dirt roads. As one of our friends put it, this is the "exploring bike", not the speed or performance bike.
