Jamis
Aurora $850
Jamis'
excellent touring bike value
|
| Notable
features at this price |
A
real, British-style touring bike with a pleasing red-and-chrome
finish. The nicely shaped Ritchey bars add a lot to the
comfort of an all-day ride. |
| Hardware
overview |
Shimano
Tiagra-level stuff. Shimano's offerings for road bike
gearing don't really provide a low enough gear for loaded
touring, so Jamis picks out Deore derailleurs for an ample,
wide range. |
| Why
we like this bike |
First
of all, the touring bike market is very small and there
aren't many choices on the market. There are hardly any
real touring bikes under $1000. This bike really has everything
a long-haul tourist wants: strong wheels and space for
moderately fat tires and fenders, really low gears, and
a relaxed riding posture. |
| Who
is this bike for? |
- Someone
who wants an "exploring bike" for day-tripping
the bumpy back roads,
- a
commuter who wants a stable ride for all conditions,
- a
long-haul tourist who will be living on this machine
for days at a time.
You
can put skinnier tires on these wheels, but this bike
will never have the zippy handling of a racing triple
like our Fuji Roubaix.
