SRAM
X9 gears and Crank Bros. pedals are much, much lighter than
comparable Shimano parts. |
| A
word about GT frames |
We've
liked GT MTB frame design and construction since they made the
move from BMX in 1989. These 6061 heat-treated Aluminum frames
are light, but not the lightest around. They are the toughest
you can buy, and everyone will tell you that. GT pioneered reinforced
head tubes and gusseted, oversized frame tubes that are now
industry standard. This frame also boasts a sophisticated hydroformed
down tube for strength and light weight. Finally, the rear fork
ends are precision aligned and the disc brake mounts are machined
after welding so that the mechanic's job of setting up the brakes
goes the way you'd want it to. If only they were all like this. |

Upgrade
to stronger, lighter 7005 Aluminum frame, Rock Shox Tora fork
with adjustable travel (85-130mm), rebound damping. SRAM X9
27 speed, Shimano Deore hydraulic disc brakes, decent wheels
have WTB rims on Shimano hubs. Candy C pedals have been a popular
upgrade. |
| Why
we like this bike |
Maximum
value for the hardtail buck in the GT line. When you ride a
bike this nice you know right away that it's so much more enjoyable
than the more basic models. Then again, you can spend hundreds
more for a bike that will only be a slight improvement in weight
and will wear out at the same rate. |
| Who
is this bike for? |
Trail
riders who like nice stuff and are willing to take care of
it, but don't require the ultimate in lightweight tech.
If
you've always had high-end sports equipment and don't want
to sell yourself short, but you aren't racing seriously, this
is a good choice for you.
